Theo Janssen takes a dig at Heracles Almelo after cup exit, Heilmann defends his selection
Theo Janssen wasted little time. Minutes after De Treffers had knocked Eredivisie side Heracles Almelo out of the first round of the Dutch national cup, the amateur club's coach delivered a remark that was polite on the surface and pointed underneath. "The tactics are clear, the lads know what is expected of them," he said, adding that his side also had "some entertaining players." The setting made the jab land harder: a packed amateur ground in Groesbeek, a professional club sent home, and a coach who knew exactly what he was saying.
The substance of the dispute, however, is not whether Heracles took the cup seriously. It is whether the eleven they fielded could reasonably have been expected to win. Janssen put the number at roughly eight changes. That figure is the single most load-bearing fact in the story, and also its weakest link, because it appears to be Janssen's own inference from the line-up rather than an official team sheet. If the real number were materially different, the entire "Heracles disrespected the cup" framing would collapse. It should be read as a reported claim, not a verified fact.
The gap between the sides was one of cohesion, not quality, and Janssen said so himself. His players, he noted, "sometimes play together in eleven-a-side games in training, but never in a match." That is the mechanism of the upset in one sentence. Eleven adequate individuals with no shared competitive rhythm against a drilled amateur block is precisely the profile that struggles. Collective automatism drops close to zero, and a settled, low-complexity opponent feeds on exactly that.
Vincent Heilmann, the Heracles coach, chose defence. He insisted the selected XI was "good enough to win this match" and rejected the "B team" label outright. "If I were to play it again, I would start these players again," he said. Internally, that is a defensible leadership message to the men he picked. Externally, it is costly, because it closes off the standard de-escalation route of conceding that the cup was not the priority.
What makes the exchange more interesting is that Heilmann's own diagnosis differs from Janssen's. He said his side should have scored inside the first 55 minutes and that he was "critical of our attacking play." Janssen is describing an attitude problem. Heilmann is describing a finishing and combination-play problem — a team that had territory but not the quality or coordination to convert it. Those are materially different conclusions, and they point in different directions.
The game state turned on Mario Borac's red card. Heilmann framed the dismissal as the moment his side lost the physical capacity to see the match out. The logic is reasonable — a professional team down to ten compresses the pitch in the amateur side's favour — but the report gives no timing, and an early dismissal carries very different weight from a late one. The causal contribution cannot be quantified.
De Treffers' edge looked organisational rather than individual. Janssen's description of a clear plan, players who know their roles, and a few entertainers is the classic amateur cup-upset formula: a settled system executed with high clarity against a disjointed professional XI. Depth does not help a bigger club in that situation; it exposes the lack of it.
There is a further wrinkle. Heracles' bench included established names such as Fabian de Keijzer, Sem Scheperman, Djevencio van der Kust and Jean-Paul N'Djoli, which suggests the rotation was about resting regulars rather than promoting youth. A small-budget Eredivisie club cannot maintain two competitive XIs, so heavy rotation is a structural constraint as much as a choice.
Financially, the effect runs almost entirely one way. Heracles lose the upside of a cup run — gate receipts, modest prize money, broadcast exposure — but simultaneously shed two midweek fixtures and the squad-cost exposure attached to them. For a club of that size, the net financial effect of an early exit is closer to neutral than the sporting narrative implies. For De Treffers it is asymmetric and large in relative terms: a full ground, progression money and the commercial glow of eliminating a professional side. For an amateur operation, that can approach a season-defining revenue event.
On results, the verdict is simple. For Heracles this is below expectation, because elimination by a lower-division side is a binary failure regardless of selection. But the pressure will be indexed to the next league result, not this one. Cup exits of this kind are survivable; a subsequent league defeat converts "one bad night" into "a run." Heilmann's job security will be determined by league position far more than by a cup round.
Janssen's intervention was asymmetric in cost. He risked nothing and gained profile. Heilmann must now defend a decision he cannot unmake. His own description of the jab as "the classic Dutch way of looking at this" is an acknowledgement that it was calculated rather than naive. On governance, there is no breach here: KNVB Cup regulations do not oblige a club to field its strongest available XI, so rotation is a sporting judgement, not an integrity issue.
The summary is straightforward. De Treffers won what was within their control — a clear plan, shared habits and their own ground. Heracles lost what was not within theirs — cohesion and the habit of playing together. One cup night does not change a club's standing, but it does expose how wide the gap is between their first choice and their rest. For an Eredivisie side whose real target is league survival, that information is worth considerably more than the disappointment of going out.
